Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is also known as nose job, nasal surgery, nose reshaping. Rhinoplasty changes the shape or size of the bone, cartilage or soft tissues of the nose to obtain a more pleasing shape and size of the nose.

Reasons for Rhinoplasty

Are you unhappy with the appearance of your nose? The nose is of the most prominent feature of your face. If your nose is too small, too large, too flat or too broad, too long or too short it will seem out of proportion with your face. Is your nose crooked or irregular after an injury or simply just grew that way? An unsightly bump or pronounced curve to the nose often distracts others when they look at you. During a rhinoplasty a crooked nose will be made straighter and /or an unsightly bump reduced. To create a more aesthetic harmony to the faceto help you look and feel more attractive and confident. Rhinoplasty may also be performed as part of a surgery to improve breathing through the nose.

FAQs

Who is a candidate for a rhinoplasty?

Unless there are over riding functional reasons performing the surgery early, younger patients should wait until they reach full skeletal growth before having the procedure. For girls this is at least 16 years old and for boys this is generally around 18 years.

There is no upper age limit as long as the individual is in good overall health. But patients should be mindful that factors beyond the surgeon’s control such as how well the skin contracts or how easily the bone can shaped become more difficult with advancing years.

Is a standard rhinoplasty procedure the only way to improve the appearance of the nose?

No. Non surgical rhinoplasty using long lasting or permanent injectable agents may be all that is needed to obtain the desired nasal contours. At other times augmenting the chin and/or checks will obtain the desired aesthetic facial proportions without touching the nose.

What is Healing like after Rhinoplasty?

Most patients have little or no discomfort after rhinoplasty and will wear a splint or tape for a few days after the procedure.

  • Do your best to avoid bumping your nose or rolling onto your face during the night

  • Refrain from blowing your nose for approximately a week

  • If you must sneeze, sneeze with your mouth open for the two weeks

  • Gently apply Bacitracin ointment twice a day to the inside of the nostril. Avoid Neosporin or “Triple Antoboitic” ointments

  • Be aware that smiling, coughing and sneezing may be slightly painful

  • Keeping your head elevated as much as possible and sleeping on your back facing up will help reduce swelling faster

Are There Risks Involved with Rhinoplasty?

Risks are inherent with any operation, but the risks involved with nose reshaping are minimal. Nosebleeds, difficulty breathing, scarring, uneven shape and localized numbness are possible side effects of the procedure.

Risks are one of several aspects of rhinoplasty you should discuss with Dr Perry during your pre-operative consultation. To guarantee the success of your procedure, as well as your comfort and peace of mind, discuss surgery details, post-operative requirements and reasonable expectations during your evaluation.
